Too much work on the go at the minute. Got the filming of a short-movie trilogy dvd starting soon, a new comic, way too many murals and a set of trading cards (pokemeon/top trumps style, unrelated to this drawing) over the coming weeks, so I've got pretty much no time for personal projects. As a result of this, I'm not going to be updating this or my tumblr a whole lot, as I'm not a fan of showing my commercial work..
Maybe I'll upload some behind the scenes photos and storyboards from the dvd.

Was given a couple hours to crack out another poster, for a fella called Darwin Deez. Some very cheerful tracks, some wonderful videos, fun research!

Spent an hour stressing about why I couldn't come up with an idea and the Deer just came to me... I'm glad, this was fun to do.

Also can anyone tell me the font for the title? Might be hard... I serif'd one up! Oohh Cheeky! Each letter has individual kerning too, using the lasso tool, you know why? Just 'cos.

End of month one

So July, my first month as a Freelance Illustrator, is over! My one goal was to build a respectable portfolio (i.e published work) for when I start teaching, and I've done pretty good. A lot of big clients, a lot of big local clients, a lot of murals, a lot of comic strips.
And I've had hardly any time to draw just for the fun of it. And I love it.
I was asked, out of the blue, to create a poster for one of my favourite musicians.
I was asked, again out of the blue, to do a 20ft mural.
I started a webcomic for other talented individuals to submit their own panels and it worked -19 panels in one month is pretty impressive. And they're all beautiful.
I'm the co-creator (and 'curator') of a big local thing, which is going to be taking up a lot of August.
I'm working on several 'zines and self-published comics..
I'm at the stage where clients are getting in touch with me every couple of days.
I'm at the stage where I have to turn some jobs down.
Not a bad start. Time for phase 2, which is the big part of the plan.

Got my copies of Laisse Beaucoup from the printers today, it is how I dreamed it would turn out. I've been wanting to create something completely obscene and cheap-looking for ages, so I went for it. Took a week to put together, includes comics and text pieces by me, as well as articles and art from some friends. Here's the copies I saved for myself, the rest will be given away at D&AD exhibition, London, next week. Thanks to the beautiful Kate for modelling the fuck out of the cover.

Made of Bricks mural

Some select photos from my section of a Mural I was in charge of. Probably 400ft (very rough estimate) of a car park at an indoor market (Just Save, at the junction of Calvert Lane, Spring Bank West, Hull). We got asked to do it to cover up the graffiti covering the place, hopefully nobody will cover it in obscenities.

Also got a photographer and an Interview in the local paper, so that's good for portfolio purposes. A fun 5 days indeed, thank God the weather was fucking beautiful.

Some quick comic strips for my 'zine, Laisse Beaucoup, which will be given away for free to clients and agencies etc. at D&AD exhibition in London. Intentionally rough, it is gonna look wonderfully retro when I print it.

Got a few other talented individuals working on some pages for it, using my ideas, concepts and characters. I tell you, it is a great feeling seeing someone else's drawings of your character.

Photos from a live painting sesh in the middle of a street festival. Was very crowded, got a lot of good positive comments from passers by. Apart from one woman who came up and said I spelled Faking wrong and walked off. Tsk. Here's Jimmy Fuzz (deadfuzz.blogspot.com) in the back of the van we took the box over with.

Great day, looking forward to the next mural piece. Week away. Will have photos aplenty, working on stencils at the moment.
